The TOEFL Integrated Writing Task
Overview: What problem does this course solve?
The TOEFL iBT is a standardized language test used to measure students' ability to understand and use college-level academic English. It is a part of the application for foreign students at many universities. At the international high school I taught at, TOEFL preparation was a part of English class, and we often had to spend a great of time to explain the complicated structures of many of the tasks before students can practice with authentic samples. I decided to create a video on the format of one of the more complicated task on the test. Students can watch this video before attending class, and in turn a huge amount of class time can be saved.
Design & Development
I decided to create the video using Camtasia and to include voice-over, charts, and animation to make the video engaging. The video would explain the structure of the task, what to look for in the prompt, and how to organize the response. I first created a storyboard that included the voice-over script and helped to determine the sequence of the information to be presented. Then, I worked out the timing of the animation carefully to math the voice-over. Next, I used Camtasia to record and edit the voice-over and then created the corresponding animations following the storyboard.Â
